Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called on provinces and law enforcement agencies to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption and ease pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
The prime minister made the remarks while addressing a ceremony held for the provision of eco-friendly electric vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police. He said the transition to EVs could play an important role in cutting reliance on imported fuel, particularly at a time of rising global oil prices.
Officials said a total of 15 electric vehicles have been provided under the initiative, with more expected to be inducted in the coming phase. The vehicles operate on battery power and do not require petrol or diesel, making them a cleaner and more cost-efficient alternative.

The move is part of the government’s broader energy conservation strategy, which includes promoting fuel-efficient technologies and reducing overall energy consumption.
The prime minister said wider adoption of electric mobility across government departments could contribute to long-term savings and environmental sustainability, while also helping stabilise the country’s external account by lowering fuel import costs.
