Lahore: The Punjab government has approved the pilot phase of its long-anticipated electric taxi (e-taxi) project, which will see the launch of 1,100 electric vehicles and the installation of solar-powered charging stations across the province.
The approval was granted during a special meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, which focused on reviewing key mass transit and public mobility initiatives.

According to officials, the meeting granted in-principle approval to the financial model of the e-taxi project, emphasizing eco-friendly transport solutions. The pilot phase will involve 1,100 electric taxis, and the government has also decided to install solar-powered systems to support charging infrastructure. A proposal to set up charging stations adjacent to existing petrol pumps was also discussed to maximize accessibility.
The Punjab government is expected to offer subsidies under the e-taxi scheme to make it financially viable for operators and accessible to the public.
During the session, authorities also presented the feasibility report for the Yellow Line mass transit system. The Chief Minister ordered immediate steps to begin construction of the Yellow Line, which will run from Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura in Lahore. She instructed that the route planning be guided by public convenience and commuter needs.
Additionally, the meeting called for a comprehensive report on proposed mass transit routes in Gujranwala to expand public transport services in other major cities.

The e-taxi initiative is part of Punjab’s broader shift toward sustainable and modern public transportation. The government aims to reduce environmental impact, lower operational costs, and introduce green alternatives for urban mobility.
In a separate development, CM Maryam Nawaz also directed health authorities to ensure free treatment for Pakistani patients who recently returned from India without completing medical procedures, following renewed tensions between the two countries.
