Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to introduce dedicated bike lanes on major roads across Lahore as part of measures to improve traffic management and road safety. The news was reported by a source on September 1, 2026.
According to the details, the directive was issued during a meeting on traffic management, where authorities were also instructed to strengthen enforcement of traffic rules, including compliance by vehicles operating under the Suthra Punjab programme. The meeting approved a pilot project on The Mall to digitally monitor zebra crossings through cameras and improve compliance with pedestrian crossing rules. A proposal for pedestrian alert buttons was also discussed.
Ferozepur Road was designated as a model road, while authorities were directed to install traffic signals at Pine Avenue and Jati Umra Chowk. CM Maryam also ordered measures to address congestion at Shahdara and Thokar Niaz Baig and directed stricter enforcement against uncovered and overloaded tractor-trolleys.
Officials said traffic congestion had declined by up to 70% at several key locations, including Jati Umra Chowk, Pine Avenue, Defence Mor, Karim Block, Akbar Flyover, Kahna and Main Boulevard. The meeting was further informed that 4,096 traffic permits or licences had been issued to young people aged 16 to 18, while 65,000 panic buttons had been installed for women at various locations across Lahore.
