Lahore: The Punjab government has launched its first e-taxi scheme, aimed at promoting green transport and generating employment opportunities across the province.
In the first phase of the programme, 1,100 electric vehicles will be distributed — 1,000 for the corporate sector and 100 for individual applicants. Of these, 30 vehicles have been reserved for women drivers.
According to officials, applications can be submitted online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. The vehicles will be provided on five-year interest-free instalments, with the government covering all interest costs.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the initiative will help reduce reliance on conventional fuel while encouraging the use of electric vehicles in the province.

The launch follows Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s announcement earlier this week that 15 electric buses had begun operating on various routes in Mianwali, supported by four charging units at the terminal. She also inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service and a new bus terminal in the district.
The chief minister said the e-taxi and e-bus projects would gradually be expanded to other cities, making eco-friendly and modern transport accessible across Punjab. In April, the provincial cabinet had approved a plan to deploy 1,500 electric buses in multiple districts.
