Lahore: Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has launched automatic SIM card electricity meters to curb power theft, according to a news report. The project has been launched in collaboration with Asian Development Bank (ADB).
WAPDA officials stated that LESCO will introduce 1.8 million propelled meters over the next four years. The project is financed by the ADB loan and will cost approximately PKR 30 million. This will expedite the billing setup by sending the data collected by meter reading directly to a server and generating an electronic electricity bill. This will also help counter power theft and will streamline the billing process.
The introduction of automatic SIM-based electricity meters is a positive step. It can make meter reading more accurate, reduce billing errors, and help control electricity theft. If implemented properly across Lahore, it should also make the billing process much more convenient for consumers.
