The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) on Sunday announced that major projects to improve aviation infrastructure and passenger facilities are underway across the country, with several initiatives scheduled for completion by 2026.
The expansion of Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport terminal is expected to be completed by September 2026, while Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport will see its runway upgraded by January 2026. These projects aim to enhance passenger experience and strengthen operational efficiency at the country’s busiest airports.
PAA also confirmed that flight procedures under the RNP-AR system will be implemented at Skardu, Gilgit, and Chitral airports by June 2026. The new system is expected to reduce flight delays and cancellations caused by adverse weather conditions, improving connectivity to northern regions.

In addition, new greenfield airports are being planned in Dera Ismail Khan, Sukkur, and Faisalabad. The second phase of upgrades at Skardu Airport and Mandi Bahauddin General Aviation Aerodrome is set to begin next year.
At Karachi Airport, final approvals have been granted for the construction of a new air traffic control tower and a dedicated rescue and fire station, which will further enhance safety and air traffic management.
“These initiatives are part of our efforts to make Pakistan’s aviation sector safer, more efficient, and accessible, while providing modern facilities for passengers nationwide,” PAA said in a statement.
The authority added that these projects will support the growth of domestic and international air travel, ensuring that airports meet regional and global standards for infrastructure and operational excellence.
