Lahore: The Punjab government has launched the Green Railway Corridor project to transform abandoned and garbage-strewn Pakistan Railways land into landscaped public spaces and parks along a 45-kilometre corridor.
The four-phase project aims to develop 32 parks along railway corridors across the province as part of the government’s efforts to improve the urban environment and expand recreational facilities.
Under the first phase, around 20 acres of land between Shahdara and Raiwind have been converted into green belts, gardens and recreational areas. A total of 21 parks have already been developed along the railway track.
The project, estimated to cost more than PKR 1.77 billion, is being implemented jointly by the Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) and Pakistan Railways and is divided into four packages.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the authorities to remove hurdles delaying the remaining phases and accelerate implementation. The initiative is aimed at creating greener public spaces and providing recreational facilities for children, women and families while improving the surroundings along railway corridors.
Residents have welcomed the conversion of previously neglected and garbage-filled areas into public parks and recreational spaces.
