Karachi: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday inaugurated the 39-kilometre-long Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway, a major road corridor linking Karachi’s Qayyumabad area to the M-9 Motorway.
The PPP chairman also laid the foundation stone for a new expressway project that will connect Karachi Port to Qayyumabad, aimed at improving cargo movement and road connectivity in the city.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Murad Ali Shah said the Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway comprises six lanes, six interchanges and a five-kilometre elevated section.
He said the project was completed in phases, with the first nine-kilometre segment inaugurated in January 2025, followed by a four-kilometre section in June last year. The remaining portion was inaugurated on Friday.

The Sindh chief minister said the expressway took around four to four-and-a-half years to complete and noted that authorities prioritised avoiding displacement of communities along the route, which contributed to the project timeline.
According to Murad, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time for commuters leaving Karachi towards other parts of Sindh, as well as Punjab and Balochistan, by approximately one hour.
He added that development projects worth PKR 1.7 trillion are currently underway in Karachi, while projects exceeding PKR 70 billion have been approved in the past three months.
