Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced that all future relief payments under government welfare programmes will be made exclusively through digital wallets, marking a significant shift toward a unified national digital payment system.
Speaking at a ceremony held to honour contributors to the success of the Prime Minister’s Ramazan Relief Package, the premier said the government was committed to modernising fund disbursement methods to ensure speed, transparency, and dignity for recipients.

“Through digital wallets, 79% of the relief funds were distributed seamlessly and without a hitch,” the prime minister noted, highlighting the inefficiencies of the previous manual system. He added that next year’s relief disbursements would be made entirely through digital means, ensuring full transparency and accountability.
Sharif also announced plans to integrate provincial systems into a centralised national digital payment framework, enabling a streamlined and coordinated welfare delivery mechanism across the country.
Federal Secretary of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Amir Ahmed Ali, gave a detailed briefing on the Ramazan Relief Package’s performance and praised the role of digital wallets in improving delivery and reducing leakages.

The prime minister concluded the event by presenting honorary shields to officials and private sector partners who played key roles in implementing the programme successfully.
The move is seen as a step toward long-term reforms in social protection systems, with experts expecting broader adoption of digital financial tools across other public services in the near future.
