Lahore: The Punjab government has announced that Lahore’s upcoming electric tram service will operate along the left bank of Canal Road to minimise traffic disruption.
According to Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA) sources, the first phase of the project will see the tram run from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig. Road widening will be carried out near tram stops to facilitate passenger movement, while underpasses along Canal Road will be converted into single lanes to improve traffic flow. A proposal to shift the Jail Road underpass to one side is also under consideration.

The modern tram, comprising three units imported from China, will run entirely on electricity. It can travel 25 to 27 kilometres on just 10 minutes of charging and has a capacity of 250 passengers, with the ability to accommodate up to 300 during peak times.
Officials say the service is aimed at providing a fast, eco-friendly public transport option for residents, while also easing congestion along one of Lahore’s busiest routes.
