Islamabad: Breaking new ground in the public sector, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based ChatBot to assist taxpayers with general information on tax-related queries.
The generative AI-powered system, now live on the FBR website in beta mode, marks the first time any federal or provincial government body in Pakistan has introduced a public-facing AI-enabled service.
According to FBR officials, the ChatBot is designed to provide round-the-clock assistance, offering tailored responses to individual queries. Unlike traditional helplines or call centres, it is expected to gradually take over many of their functions, making taxpayer facilitation faster and more efficient.

During test runs, the ChatBot responded to both basic and technical questions with quick and coherent answers. Officials said the tool is still being refined to improve accuracy and reliability as part of the FBR’s Transformation Plan, which was formally approved by the prime minister and federal cabinet earlier this year.
By embedding AI into taxpayer services, the FBR aims to modernize public facilitation and encourage wider adoption of artificial intelligence across government departments.
The revenue authority has, however, issued a disclaimer stating that the ChatBot only provides general information under applicable acts, ordinances, rules, and regulations. Its responses are AI-generated, do not represent official FBR policy, and are not legally binding or admissible in court.
