According to officials, the feasibility study will assess route options, ridership demand, and future transport needs, with particular emphasis on connecting key areas of the city, including Islamabad International Airport. The project will also examine requirements for depots, parking spaces, charging stations, and maintenance facilities.
The electric tram system is planned to operate under a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and will be fully digital and cashless. Chairman Randhawa also directed that the planning process include provisions for acquiring carbon credits to support the project’s environmental objectives.
Officials said the initiative aims to provide citizens with affordable and efficient transport while helping reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the capital. The feasibility study is expected to be launched at the earliest, after which further decisions will be taken based on its findings.
