Islamabad: The Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA) has been barred from launching new projects until its ongoing schemes are completed, the Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works was informed on Wednesday.
The committee, chaired by Senator Nasir Mehmood, expressed concern over delays in FGEHA projects and noted that none had been completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The committee reviewed the progress of the Bhara Kahu Green Enclave-I project, launched in 2009, with officials informing the panel that only 52% of the work had been completed.
The Ministry of Housing and Works secretary told the committee that a ban had been imposed on initiating new projects until existing schemes are completed.
Officials attributed delays in Green Enclave-I to litigation, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquiries, land disputes, bank guarantee issues, increased construction costs following the Covid-19 pandemic and contractual complications. They said work on the project had resumed, while several outstanding matters would be placed before the FGEHA board for decisions.
Representatives of Green Enclave-I allottees also raised concerns over the prolonged delay and difficulties faced by plot owners.
The committee chairman questioned the continuation of contractual arrangements despite years of delays and said thousands of citizens, particularly retired government employees, had invested in the project and deserved timely delivery.
The committee directed that the project’s contractor, Dr Hafeez Abbasi, be summoned at its next meeting to explain the delays and called on all stakeholders to cooperate for the project’s early completion.
