Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the federal government is working on a comprehensive national strategy for the construction of water reservoirs and improved water management across the four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the strategy will be developed in full consultation and coordination with provincial governments. Shehbaz stressed that climate change is a reality and only effective preparedness can reduce the scale of damages caused by natural disasters.
“The federation, provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan must work hand in hand to protect the people from the adverse impacts of climate change,” he said, describing the matter as a national issue that demands collective effort.
Work is already underway on his directives to formulate an effective policy for timely response to climate challenges, particularly during the monsoon season. A draft working paper of the policy will soon be shared with all provincial governments to establish a unified course of action.

The statement further said that once the current emergency situation subsides, the Prime Minister will convene a high-level meeting with the chief ministers of the four provinces, along with the heads of relevant institutions. The Prime Minister of AJK and the Chief Minister of GB will also be invited to the session.
Officials said the plan will prioritise the construction of new reservoirs, modern water management practices, and disaster preparedness measures aimed at enhancing resilience in the face of worsening climate change impacts.
