Islamabad: Islamabad’s authorities have approved regulations for the upgrading of slums in the federal capital, marking a formal step toward improving living conditions in informal settlements across the city.
The approval of the slum upgrade rules establishes a structured approach to addressing challenges posed by these settlements. The regulations provide a framework for improving infrastructure and basic services, including roads, water supply, and sanitation, for residents of affected areas.

The new rules aim to integrate marginalised communities into Islamabad’s formal urban planning system, offering a legal and operational framework for slum improvement rather than relying solely on demolition or relocation. They outline criteria for identifying eligible settlements, standards for the upgrading process, and the roles and responsibilities of government agencies, residents, and potential private-sector partners.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to address the city’s affordable housing challenges and improve living standards for low-income residents. The federal capital administration has emphasised coordination between relevant departments and stakeholders to ensure that the planned upgrades are carried out efficiently and meet the prescribed standards.
