Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will develop a mangroves and biodiversity park along China Creek, along with a dedicated learning centre aimed at promoting environmental conservation, climate resilience and eco-tourism.
The announcement was made by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab during a visit to the proposed project site on Saturday.
He said the initiative is designed to protect Karachi’s coastal ecosystem while also creating a public space for environmental education, research and recreation. He described the project as a long-term investment in the city’s environmental future amid rapid urban expansion and growing climate-related challenges.
“Environmental sustainability must remain central to our development agenda,” the mayor said, adding that the project would help preserve Karachi’s ecological assets while encouraging tourism, public awareness and community participation.

According to KMC, the proposed biodiversity park will include mangrove conservation zones, ecological trails, educational facilities and awareness programmes to help connect residents with the city’s natural environment.
Mangrove forests, officials noted, play a vital role in protecting coastlines from erosion, storm surges and rising sea levels. They also serve as important breeding grounds for marine life and are among the world’s most effective natural carbon sinks.
The China Creek project is part of broader efforts to strengthen Karachi’s environmental infrastructure and promote sustainable urban development.
