Karachi: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a Rs1.6 billion flyover aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing accidents in the city.
The four-lane flyover will connect the National Highway with the Mehran Highway and will be constructed over the railway line at Khalid Bin Waleed Road. Wahab said the project would be completed within 100 days and include a one-metre-wide drainage line to address rainwater accumulation during monsoons.
Terming the initiative “a gift from the Pakistan Peoples Party to the residents of Bhains Colony,” the mayor noted that the demand for a flyover at the site had been longstanding due to frequent accidents at the railway crossing.

He further announced plans for new bridges at Azeempura for Shahrah-e-Bhutto commuters and at Quaidabad near the Murghi Khana bridge. Wahab said these projects reflect the Sindh government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s infrastructure, traffic flow, and commuter safety.
The mayor also highlighted other development initiatives, including the construction of a new Hub Canal within nine and a half months and the ongoing augmentation of the K-IV project, which, along with rehabilitation of the old Hub Canal, is expected to enhance the city’s water supply to 200 million gallons per day by December.
Wahab said that development schemes were being pursued in the public interest and urged opposition parties to focus on securing federal funds for Karachi instead of politicising civic issues.
