Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Monday approved a major infrastructure rehabilitation programme aimed at upgrading roads and municipal services across the city. The decision was finalised during a meeting of the KMC Engineering Department, chaired by Mayor Murtaza Wahab.
Under the programme, the KMC will carry out extensive road rehabilitation across all districts, including 183 additional roads beyond those under its direct control, to improve connectivity and traffic flow. Priority will be given to major and high-traffic arteries, while ensuring alternative routes remain accessible to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Mayor Wahab instructed that all projects be prioritised and that tenders be issued before Eid to enable prompt commencement of work. Departments have been directed to maintain steady execution in line with project scopes.
The programme also includes enhancements to street lighting systems, with Jahangir Road set to be converted to solar-powered lighting. Municipal Commissioner Samira Hussain briefed the meeting on the selection of roads across various districts, emphasising safety and operational efficiency.
“The engineering and relevant departments have been tasked with not only rehabilitating roads but also ensuring safer and better-lit streets,” the statement said.
The KMC’s plan is expected to significantly improve traffic management, road safety, and municipal service delivery across Karachi.
