Islamabad: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has approved a series of new road projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting tourism infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to an official statement, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan chaired a review meeting at the NHA headquarters, where multiple development projects for the northern region were approved.
During the meeting, approval was granted for a 54-kilometre road from Astore to Chilam Chowki and a 31-kilometre road connecting Skardu to Deosai. These projects are expected to enhance access to key tourist and remote areas in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The minister directed that all new roads must have a minimum width of 7.3 metres to ensure safer travel conditions in mountainous terrain. He also instructed that existing narrow roads be widened and paved to improve safety and mobility in the region.

Emphasising the importance of infrastructure development, the minister said improved road networks are essential to support tourism and economic activity in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Additional projects were also approved, including roads in Upper Kachura, Basho, and Shigar. A 36-kilometre road connecting the Karakoram Highway to Naltar Scenic Lake was also approved, along with a 12-kilometre road leading to Fairy Meadows.
The minister further directed the NHA to coordinate closely with the Gilgit-Baltistan government and prepare detailed project briefings to ensure timely execution of tourism-related infrastructure schemes.
