Rawalpindi: The long-awaited Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road is set to be inaugurated on June 30, alongside two underpasses on Mall Road and an underground pedestrian walkway. The infrastructure projects, aimed at easing Rawalpindi’s chronic traffic congestion, are nearing completion and will be formally opened by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, located at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, has been constructed at a cost of PKR 2.3 billion. Originally scheduled for inauguration on June 3, the date was pushed back to align with the completion of other projects in the vicinity.

On the same day, two underpasses located at Flashman Hotel Chowk and Mall Plaza Chowk on Mall Road, along with a pedestrian underpass near the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), are also expected to be opened to the public. The combined cost of these Mall Road underpasses and walkway stands at PKR 4.388 billion.
All projects are being funded by the Punjab government and executed by the provincial Communications and Works (C&W) Department, in coordination with the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB).
Beyond the June 30 inaugurations, additional infrastructure upgrades are in the pipeline. Construction is expected to begin shortly on:
- A new flyover and underpasses at Kachehri Chowk (estimated cost: PKR 8.5 billion)
- Underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course Chowk, and Charing Cross, three of the busiest intersections along Mall and Peshawar Roads.
To expedite construction and minimize disruption, these works are planned to begin during the ongoing summer vacations in educational institutions. RCB has already been directed to begin relocating underground utilities—electricity, gas, water, and sewerage systems—at the identified construction sites.

Once completed, these projects—together with the already operational Golra Mor underpass—are expected to transform the route from Mall Road to Motorway Chowk into a signal-free corridor. This is expected to significantly reduce travel time and traffic bottlenecks for commuters moving through Rawalpindi’s key urban arteries. These infrastructure developments are part of the Punjab government’s broader push to modernize urban mobility and are being implemented with the aim of facilitating smoother traffic flow and long-term urban growth in Rawalpindi.
