Karachi: Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Saturday inaugurated Pakistan’s first floating Mangrove Biodiversity Park at Korangi Creek, a landmark initiative developed in collaboration with the Sindh Forest Department.
The park is the country’s first dedicated mangrove biodiversity site and the first to be established on water. Speaking at the inauguration, Wahab said the project would play a vital role in conserving mangroves and raising public awareness about environmental protection.
He welcomed the participation of real estate stakeholders in the initiative, describing it as a positive sign for future generations. The mayor also announced plans to set up another mangrove park near the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) building, and urged other authorities, including Port Qasim and Malir Development Authority, to launch similar projects.

Wahab congratulated the forest department for securing a Guinness World Record in mangrove plantation and reaffirmed that the city administration would continue efforts for ecological preservation despite challenges.
He called on civil society, the media, and business owners to support the project and share ideas to help transform Karachi into a modern and environmentally friendly metropolis.
A day later, Wahab highlighted that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has earmarked PKR 28 billion for city development this year, as part of a wider PKR 400 billion portfolio. The projects include the PKR 70 billion K-IV water scheme, multiple new bridges, and restoration of 106 roads damaged by rains.
