Construction begins on Pak’s first FIFA Arena pitch in Lahore

A major step toward strengthening grassroots football in Pakistan has been taken with the start of construction on the country’s first FIFA Arena pitch in Lahore. The facility is being developed in the Sabzazar area at a government school, marking a collaborative effort between the Pakistan Football Federation, provincial authorities, and the public education sector.

The project is part of the global FIFA Arena initiative led by FIFA, which focuses on building standardized, small-sided football pitches to improve access to the sport for young players. These mini pitches are designed to be easily integrated into schools and communities, offering structured playing environments where formal facilities have traditionally been limited.

Officials say the Lahore installation represents the first on-ground outcome of a broader infrastructure push aimed at promoting football at the grassroots level across Pakistan. By placing the facility within a school, the initiative also aligns sports development with educational institutions, making the game more accessible to students.

PFF President Mohsen Gilani described the project as a significant milestone, noting that expanding access to quality football infrastructure remains central to the federation’s long-term plans. He added that additional FIFA Arena pitches are already in the pipeline, including projects planned in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The initiative has also received backing from international bodies such as FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, whose engagement with Pakistani authorities has helped move development plans from concept to execution. Government facilitation and partnerships with public institutions have further supported the rollout.

So far, 11 FIFA Arena pitches have been approved for Pakistan, with more proposals under consideration. The Lahore project is therefore seen not just as a standalone development, but as the starting point of a wider effort to build football infrastructure, expand participation, and create pathways for young talent across the country.
