Peshawar: Authorities have installed panic buttons at 68 locations across Peshawar under the Safe City Project to improve emergency response and enhance public safety, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
The devices, equipped with audio and video communication features, are directly linked to the Safe City headquarters, enabling citizens to contact law enforcement instantly in emergency situations. Officials said activating a panic button would allow police to respond without delay.
Zulfiqar Hameed said the initiative is aimed at strengthening safety measures in crowded public areas, particularly for students, women, and other vulnerable groups. He added that the system is designed to reduce response times and improve coordination between citizens and law enforcement.

According to the official statement, the panic button network forms part of a broader effort to modernise policing infrastructure in the provincial capital through the Safe City Project. The buttons have been strategically placed at key locations and are integrated with a central monitoring system to ensure real-time communication.
Authorities said the system provides a direct and immediate link between the public and police, facilitating quicker assistance during emergencies.
Officials also indicated that similar facilities are planned for rollout in other cities, though no timeline or further operational details were shared.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the provincial police to adopt technology-driven solutions to enhance public safety and improve service delivery.
