Lahore: The Punjab government has approved the long-delayed PKR 50 billion Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), a major project aimed at preventing untreated sewage from being discharged into the River Ravi.
The approval was granted by the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) during its recent meeting. Officials said the project, pending for decades, will be funded through French assistance and executed by the Punjab government. Final clearance will now be sought from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).
In its first phase, the Babu Sabu WWTP will be capable of treating up to 88 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce river pollution, protect aquatic life, and improve water quality for communities depending on the Ravi.

Experts have long pointed to untreated sewage as a major cause of environmental and health hazards in Lahore. The new plant is being described as a critical step toward modernizing the city’s infrastructure and aligning with international standards of urban wastewater management.
Authorities noted that the project will also help Pakistan meet environmental commitments while reducing long-term costs associated with waterborne diseases and ecological degradation.
