Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) will launch a PKR 470 million beautification and pedestrianisation project in Raja Bazaar — from Fawara Chowk to Hamilton Road — after 12 Rabiul Awal.
The initiative, finalised despite objections from local tradePKR , will include replacing lampposts, installing benches, constructing washrooms, restoring old buildings, planting greenery, and upgrading signboards to create a family-friendly environment. The district administration, Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), RMC, and other departments will jointly carry out the work.
A major component of the plan is the laying of underground electricity cables along the one-kilometre stretch, to be undertaken by Iesco at a cost of PKR 200 million. SNGPL and PTCL have been allocated PKR 30 million each for relocating services, while Wasa will receive PKR 5 million for shifting water lines. In total, PKR 250 million will be spent on utility relocation and PKR 220 million on beautification.

The project also includes a new traffic management strategy, expanded parking spaces, and the construction of a model market with modern facilities to attract tourists.
RMC officials said work was delayed earlier due to changes in the underground cabling plan and will now begin after the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) on August 14 and the 12 Rabiul Awal processions.
However, the Traders Action Committee has warned of protests if the bazaar is not reopened to general traffic by August 15, citing falling sales, emptying rented shops, and job losses. They also complained of restricted access and lack of consultation from the administration.
