Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday approved the establishment of the Model Aquaculture Park along the province’s coastal belt and reviewed progress on the Nabisar-Vajihar Water Supply Project.
Chairing the 48th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy Board at the CM House, Shah endorsed the development of the proposed aquaculture park by the SEZ Management Company on transferred land in Thatta district’s coastal area.
The project will feature earthen ponds, hatcheries, seafood processing units, renewable energy solutions, and export linkages to global markets. It is expected to boost exports, promote sustainable fish farming, stabilise domestic production, create jobs, and support technology transfer in the province’s coastal communities.

The chief minister highlighted Sindh’s potential to become an export-oriented aquaculture hub, citing the province’s 350-kilometre coastline and its share of over 70% of Pakistan’s marine resources. He noted that with global aquaculture production reaching 223 million tonnes in 2022 and domestic demand projected to triple by 2030, the sector offers vast growth opportunities.
The board also approved Project Development Facility funding to hire consultants for feasibility and structuring work. Shah said the initiatives would help unlock Sindh’s blue economy and strengthen livelihoods along the coast.
On the Nabisar-Vajihar project, the board was informed that construction is progressing steadily, with commercial operation expected this month. The scheme aims to supply 45 cusecs of water to Thar Block-I power plants.
Officials reported significant cost savings due to stable exchange rates and lower financing costs, keeping the project within budget. The CM appreciated the team’s efforts in maintaining timelines and performance standards.
To ensure sustainable water management, Shah also directed the formation of a technical committee to explore long-term solutions for the Hakro River area. The board reaffirmed its commitment to completing vital infrastructure projects supporting Thar’s energy and water security.
