Rawalpindi: Construction of the Thalian Interchange will begin after the inauguration of the Rawalpindi Ring Road, which is expected to open for traffic in July, project officials have said.
Deputy Project Director Ashfaq Sulheri said work on the PKR 47 billion Rawalpindi Ring Road is nearing completion, with asphalt paving finished on the 38-kilometre route. The project is expected to be formally handed over to the Punjab government in the first week of July, after which an inauguration date will be announced.
He said construction of the Thalian Interchange is likely to commence next month and is expected to take around three months to complete. The project includes a four-lane interchange and the widening of the bridge over the motorway leading to Islamabad International Airport.
Final works on the Ring Road, including lane markings, drainage, fencing, landscaping, signage and lighting, are currently underway.
Once operational, the Ring Road is expected to carry more than 30,000 vehicles daily, with a speed limit of 120 kilometres per hour. A toll collection system, similar to that used on the Lahore Ring Road, will also be introduced.
The 38.3-kilometre corridor stretches from Baanth on GT Road to Thalian on the motorway and includes five interchanges. Authorities expect the project to divert a significant share of passenger and freight traffic away from the congested road network of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, improving traffic flow across the twin cities.
