Lahore: A draft of the Urban Forest Policy, 2019 was submitted before a single-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday – a news source reported.
Justice Jawad Hassan heard a set of petitions filed by several citizens. These petitioners argued that the provincial government had yet to take concrete measures for developing the forest cover.
In response, government representatives presented the draft forest policy. Under this policy, an afforestation drive will be launched in at least 50 cities of the province.
Moreover, all housing societies as well as government departments – including schools and hospitals – will be bound to develop green areas in their premises.
Additional Secretary of the Forest Department informed that the PC-I for this purpose is being prepared. The authorities concerned will approve this form during a meeting on February 21.
Justice Hassan directed to present the draft policy before the Punjab Cabinet for approval. He remarked that relevant departments must be consulted in this regard.
The court adjourned the case till February 26. Justice Hassan also issued summons for DG Agriculture and other officials concerned.
