Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced the launch of a feasibility study for two new light rail lines in Islamabad, aimed at improving public transport and integrating with the city’s existing e-bus network.
The study, approved during a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, will be conducted by the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and is expected to be completed within three months.
One proposed line would run from Lake View Park southwest through the city centre to Islamabad International Airport, while the second line would connect Lake View Park southeast via Rawalpindi to Rawat. Lake View Park is also expected to serve as the starting point for the proposed Murree Glass Train monorail project.

CDA Chairman Randhawa directed that the light rail system should be fully digital and cashless. He also emphasized the need to acquire carbon credits during the planning phase, underlining the project’s environmentally friendly approach.
Officials said the light rail project is part of Islamabad’s broader efforts to modernize public transport and provide an integrated, sustainable, and convenient mobility solution for residents.
