Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to procure modern machinery and enhance manpower as part of a comprehensive plan to overhaul the waste management system in Islamabad.
The decision was taken during a meeting held at the CDA Headquarters on Monday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting reviewed measures to ensure a high-standard cleanliness and sanitation system for the federal capital.
According to a CDA spokesperson, the authority resolved to immediately fulfill requirements for new machinery and additional workforce to improve both primary and secondary waste collection across the city. A detailed discussion was also held on devising a comprehensive and sustainable cleanliness strategy to address sanitation-related issues.

The chairman announced that a special cleanliness campaign would be launched throughout Islamabad, with a focus on modern equipment, effective planning and enhanced operational capacity. The number of waste containers in both urban and rural areas will be increased, while damaged containers already installed in the city will be repaired. Authorities also plan to expand the number of waste trolleys and install additional dustbins to facilitate proper waste disposal.
To promote segregation and recycling, the chairman directed that a three-bin system be implemented in commercial centres (Marakiz). Local traders will be engaged in the cleanliness drive, and mohallah committees will be formed to encourage community participation in maintaining sanitation standards.
Randhawa also directed officials to impose challans and fines on those found littering in commercial and public areas. He said the Islamabad Food Authority should take action against restaurants contributing to improper waste disposal.

To strengthen monitoring, a 24/7 control room will be established to oversee sanitation operations across the capital. Helpline numbers for public complaints will be displayed on digital screens to enhance awareness and responsiveness.
The meeting was further informed that wireless communication sets and new uniforms are being arranged for field staff to ensure quicker response. Additionally, the process of licensing and registration for scavengers involved in waste collection will be initiated in different areas of the city as part of regulatory reforms.
