The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a series of development projects worth over PKR 700 million aimed at restoring and improving the Old City area. Mayor Murtaza Wahab laid the foundation stone on Sunday, marking the start of the initiative.
The main project, covering areas including Jodia Bazaar, Bolton Market, Mithadar, and Kharadar, will be completed at a cost of PKR 595.6 million. An additional PKR 100 million has been allocated for the restoration of the historic Lea Market building, with work expected to be completed within 90 days.
The infrastructure works include the construction and repair of roads, laying paver blocks over 400,000 square feet, and the installation of new sewerage pipelines. In total, thousands of feet of sewerage lines will be upgraded across the key commercial areas to improve sanitation and drainage.

Mayor Wahab emphasised that the projects are part of a broader effort to equip Karachi’s Old City with modern urban facilities. He set a completion target of June 30 for the main works and stressed that all activities will be carried out transparently with coordination among municipal departments.
The foundation stone ceremony was attended by City Council leaders and local residents. The KMC has also indicated that city-wide development works for 2026 will include broader infrastructure and water projects, with a total planned expenditure of PKR 46 billion.
These initiatives aim to improve living conditions, restore historic sites, and enhance urban infrastructure in some of Karachi’s oldest and most commercially active areas.
