Lahore: In a major step towards modernizing public transport, Lahore has received its first electric tram imported from China. The initiative marks a significant addition to the city’s growing eco-friendly transit infrastructure, following the successful launch of the Orange Line Metro Train and electric buses.
According to Punjab government officials, the fully electric tram will be tested along Canal Road under a pilot project. The tram, which features three compartments, can carry up to 250 passengers and is designed for efficient, zero-emission operation.
Notably, the vehicle requires just 10 minutes of charging to travel between 25 to 27 kilometers, making it highly energy-efficient and ideal for Lahore’s urban transit needs.

Currently, assembly and preparatory work is underway at the Ali Town Depot, where the tram is being readied for its initial run. The pilot phase will allow authorities to assess the vehicle’s performance, commuter response, and road compatibility before any citywide rollout.
The introduction of the electric tram is part of the Punjab government’s broader effort to promote clean, modern, and reliable public transport options while reducing carbon emissions and urban traffic congestion.
Officials say that if the pilot project proves successful, more electric trams could be introduced on other busy routes in Lahore in the future.
