Gujranwala: The Municipal Corporation has revealed that more than a thousand buildings in Gujranwala are illegal and have been built in connivance with the building inspectors.
The city mayor had earlier tasked the authorities concerned to conduct a survey of illegal constructions. The building inspectors, along with other officials, completed the survey within five months; following the directive.
The findings revealed that at least 1,136 buildings had been illegally established in Gujranwala. Moreover, there exists no official record of the said structures.
Mayor Sheikh Sarwat Ikram said that investigations are underway against corrupt officials. He added that the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) has registered a case against allegedly corrupt officials employed within the Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile, ACE officials launched a crackdown against illegal commercial constructions and recovered PKR 130 million in the process. These developments included plazas, marriage halls, markets, and shops.
ACE has also directed Municipal Corporation officers to recover dues from the owners of the illegal commercial buildings within five days. It further ordered to seal the buildings of defaulters.
