Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced plans to introduce 10,000 electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in Peshawar as part of its initiative to provide modern, affordable, and environmentally friendly public transport.
A high-level meeting was held in Peshawar under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, with officials from the KP Urban Mobility Authority, TransPeshawar, the Bank of Khyber, and the Science and Information Technology department in attendance.
The initiative aims to reduce air pollution, lower travel costs for commuters, and improve urban mobility. E-rickshaws will be integrated into the city’s existing transport network, including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, to provide last-mile connectivity and smoother travel for residents.

Advanced battery technology, smart monitoring systems, and a digital registration mechanism will be implemented to ensure transparency, operational efficiency, and real-time monitoring of vehicle performance, charging status, and route operations.
Officials highlighted that the project will also create employment opportunities and contribute to the province’s green energy goals. A clear roadmap for the phased introduction of the e-rickshaws is being developed, with financial facilitation and technical support to ensure early implementation.
The move reflects KP’s broader focus on sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions aimed at addressing urban traffic congestion and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
