Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated the Shaheen Chowk Underpass project in Islamabad, terming it a significant step toward easing traffic congestion and enhancing the city’s infrastructure ahead of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
Addressing the foundation-laying ceremony, the prime minister said the timely completion of development projects in the federal capital would not only facilitate citizens and improve traffic flow but also project a positive image of Pakistan to the world.
He commended the Ministry of Interior and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for their efforts to accelerate work on major urban development and beautification initiatives. “With the fast-paced completion of these projects, we are improving public convenience while showcasing Islamabad as a modern, well-planned, and vibrant city,” he remarked.

The prime minister reiterated the government’s commitment to completing all projects that serve the public interest and contribute to national progress. Earlier, he was briefed on the design and scope of the underpass before formally laying its foundation stone.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also spoke at the ceremony, said the underpass would help ease traffic congestion on Margalla Road and surrounding areas. He added that construction work on 11th Avenue was already underway, while new projects, including the Kashmir Chowk Underpass, would soon be launched.
Naqvi noted that Islamabad was being upgraded in line with international standards, with particular focus on enhancing its infrastructure and aesthetics ahead of the SCO Summit. He expressed confidence that the ongoing development drive would transform the capital into one of the most modern and attractive cities in the region within a year.
