Lahore: The Punjab government has approved the construction of a massive protective embankment along the Ravi River to shield urban populations from potential flood risks.
According to officials from the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA), the project will be financed through a PKR 150 billion government loan, while PKR 64 billion will be arranged from RUDA’s own resources. With a total estimated cost of PKR 214 billion, the initiative is aimed at protecting Lahore from recurring flood threats.

The plan includes building a 90-kilometre-long retaining wall on both sides of the Ravi. The embankment will be 300 feet wide and 27 feet high, incorporating water training structures to regulate the river’s flow and reduce the risk of inundation.
The decision was finalized in a meeting chaired by the Secretary Housing, with senior RUDA officials in attendance.
Authorities believe the project will not only safeguard Lahore’s residents but also provide long-term resilience against the challenges posed by seasonal flooding.
