Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar has announced to give property ownership rights to the dwellers of katchi abadis in the province, according to news reports shared on April 5. The source claims that the CM has directed the Board of Revenue (BoR) to do the needful in order to implement this decision.
Speaking at the occasion, Buzdar said that during the 3.5 years of his tenure, the provincial government kept its focus on the well-being of citizens. Giving the residents of katchi abadis ownerships rights of the property they reside in is part of these efforts, he added. News sources claim that the CM has instructed the concerned departments to take immediate actions in order to implement the decision.
It is worth noting that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan had announced in June 2021 that slums and shantytowns throughout Punjab will be regularized and the residents of these abadis will be given property ownership rights. The initiative was to be implemented in stages, beginning with the registration of dwellers of Katchi abadis located on the outskirts of Lahore.
As per the media reports, the number of slum residents in Punjab has been rising, and the government has undertaken several programmes to help this segment of the society.
