Islamabad: The Senate has approved legislation to establish a formal regulatory framework for ride-hailing services operating in Islamabad. The law aims to enhance safety, accountability, and administrative oversight in the rapidly growing sector.
Under the new framework, all ride-hailing drivers must be officially registered with the designated authority, and companies are required to obtain an operational certificate before offering services in the capital. Unregistered drivers will not be permitted to operate within Islamabad.

The legislation sets strict eligibility criteria for both drivers and vehicles. Drivers must hold a valid driving license along with a special permit, while vehicles must be properly registered and undergo annual fitness inspections. Ride-hailing companies are also obliged to maintain comprehensive records of their drivers and vehicles and provide real-time operational data to authorities upon request.
Senate officials said the move was necessary to regulate an industry that had been operating without a clear legal structure, which had led to safety and management concerns. The new law is expected to improve passenger safety, strengthen oversight, and ensure greater accountability across Islamabad’s ride-hailing sector.
