Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif on Thursday approved the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project, a long-awaited initiative aimed at improving public transport and easing daily travel in the city.
The announcement came during a special meeting held in Gujranwala, which was also attended by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and other senior officials.
Speaking at the event, Nawaz Sharif described the project as a necessary development for Gujranwala and expressed satisfaction that progress was finally underway. “This project will make life easier for the common man,” he said.

Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed attendees on the project, explaining that the Gujranwala Mass Transit System will cover more than 30 kilometres from Eminabad to Ghakkhar. The system is expected to serve over 51,000 passengers daily and will include 40 electric articulated buses, offering a modern, eco-friendly transport option.
Officials highlighted that the project represents a significant step toward upgrading the city’s infrastructure and bringing Gujranwala’s public transport on par with other major urban centres in the country.
Construction timelines and funding details were not disclosed during the meeting, but authorities emphasized the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility and public services in Gujranwala.
