Karachi: The Sindh government has formally launched the Lyari Transformation Project, a large-scale urban development initiative aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving living conditions in one of Karachi’s oldest and most densely populated areas.
The project was inaugurated on Thursday by Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah at a ceremony held in Lyari, attended by provincial lawmakers, local government representatives, party leaders, and a large number of residents.
According to officials, the project is estimated to cost PKR 25.28 billion and will be completed over a period of four years, with work already initiated on the first phase. The first phase primarily focuses on the restoration and upgrading of basic urban infrastructure.

The development plan includes construction and rehabilitation of roads, expansion and improvement of water supply lines, and upgrading of the sewerage and drainage systems. Officials said these measures are intended to address long-standing issues of water shortages, sanitation challenges, and rainwater accumulation during monsoon seasons.
The project also includes improvement of stormwater drains to reduce flooding risks, along with the installation and management of underground cabling to enhance utility services and improve the urban landscape.
In addition, a comprehensive beautification plan has been incorporated, under which parks, green belts, and public spaces in Lyari will be upgraded to improve the overall environment of the area.
Officials said the Lyari Transformation Project is part of the provincial government’s broader effort to rehabilitate neglected urban localities and bring long-term improvements in civic infrastructure and public service delivery.
