Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the launch of a smart water metering project aimed at modernizing Islamabad’s water supply system through advanced monitoring and management tools. The initiative seeks to minimize wastage, promote conservation, and ensure a transparent billing system for residents.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Islamabad Water Agency chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting was attended by Member Planning and Design Dr Khalid Hafiz, Director General (DG) Islamabad Water, DG Planning and Development, and representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Pakistan Telecommunications Infrastructure Authority (PTIA).
According to CDA officials, the smart water metering project will significantly enhance water governance by introducing a digital monitoring system that tracks consumption in real time. Chairman Randhawa said expert consultants would be hired to design and install a modern metering network across the federal capital.

“This project marks a key milestone in Islamabad’s journey toward sustainable urban management. It will help conserve water, improve accountability, and ensure efficient service delivery to citizens,” Randhawa stated.
Officials also reviewed complementary initiatives, including plans to convert tube wells and electrical systems to solar power, install energy-efficient pumps, and upgrade the city’s sewerage network. However, the water metering initiative will be implemented as a top priority.
Randhawa emphasized that the CDA’s broader vision is to adopt environmentally sustainable practices to secure a reliable and clean water supply for Islamabad’s growing population. The authority expects that the new metering system will help reduce distribution losses, prevent misuse, and bring the capital’s infrastructure in line with international standards for urban water management.
