Rawalpindi: Construction work on underpasses along Peshawar Road has officially begun, marking another major step toward transforming Rawalpindi into a signal-free city.
The project is part of a broader infrastructure initiative that includes flyovers and underpasses at key intersections such as Kachehri Chowk, Jinnah Park, Iftekhar Janjua Road, and the remodeling of Ammar Chowk. The underpasses on Peshawar Road form an adjoining segment of this ongoing development.
Rana Qamar Ali, Executive Engineer (EXEN) of the Punjab Highways Department, confirmed the initiation of the project while speaking to APP on Sunday. He said that concrete plants have been established at the site, technical investigations are currently underway, and a construction camp has been set up. Essential machinery has also been deployed to facilitate uninterrupted progress.

According to the EXEN, the project aims to address severe traffic congestion on Peshawar Road, which serves as a major link between GT Road, the Motorway, Saddar, and densely populated Cantonment areas. The road currently acts as a two-way bottleneck, causing frequent traffic jams during peak hours.
He added that once completed, the underpasses will eliminate traffic signals along the route from Ammar Chowk to Motorway Chowk, significantly improving traffic flow, reducing travel time, and easing daily commutes for millions of residents.
The Punjab government is currently executing multiple billion-rupee infrastructure projects across Rawalpindi as part of its long-term plan to develop a signal-free corridor, with the Kachehri Chowk mega project being one of the key components.
