Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is carrying out construction and rehabilitation work on internal roads across several areas of District Central, as part of a PKR 281 million uplift drive aimed at improving urban infrastructure and easing traffic flow.
Speaking at a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for various development schemes, the mayor said that road carpeting and paver block work were progressing rapidly in New Karachi Phase-II, particularly in UC-03, UC-7, UC-8, UC-9B, and Sectors 11-E and 11-D.
He said that under the citywide service drive, the KMC is restoring 106 major roads, playgrounds, and parks. “We understand that a smooth road, a clean environment, and access to basic facilities are the rights of every citizen — and the PPP administration is committed to ensuring those rights,” he added.
According to Mayor Wahab, 50,000 cubic feet of sub-base course has been completed, while 350,000 cubic feet of aggregate base course, 330,000 square feet of carpeting, and 350,000 square feet of paver blocks will be laid in the coming phase. In the New Karachi Kala School area, an additional 250,000 square feet of paver blocks are being installed to improve commuting convenience for residents.

The mayor also pointed out that road conditions are being improved near Madni Mall on Hashim Raza Road in Hyderi, while in North Nazimabad, KMC has begun constructing roads and stormwater drains. He criticised previous administrations for failing to deliver on promises, despite collecting PKR 2.5 billion in road-cutting fees.
Mayor Wahab announced that PKR 28 billion will be spent this year on upgrading Karachi’s infrastructure, with visible progress already taking place across various neighbourhoods. “KMC, with a spirit of public service, is committed to making Karachi cleaner, better, and more modern,” he said.
He also shared that development work is underway on Manghopir Road, and that talks with the federal government are in progress regarding the construction of flyovers at Power House and 4-K Chowrangi.
The mayor added that while some individuals challenge encroachment removals in court, efforts to ensure smoother traffic flow continue. He said an alternate route at Natha Khan Bridge is being developed, while the E-Challan system is being expanded to include heavy vehicles and dumpers, in addition to motorcyclists and car owners, to improve traffic discipline across the city.
