Lahore: Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has said the government is pursuing reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and promoting a cashless economy to improve financial transparency, broaden the tax base and support sustainable economic growth.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the FBR’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Aurangzeb said the government was working to reform tax policy and administration, improve FBR efficiency and use modern technology to facilitate taxpayers.

He said a new model was being introduced at the FBR to improve transparency and institutional efficiency, while efforts were also underway to strengthen data-sharing systems to curb tax evasion and improve policymaking.
The minister said the government had detected major cases of sales tax evasion, resulting in higher tax collection. He stressed that modern digital systems, integrated databases and artificial intelligence were essential for effective tax administration.
Aurangzeb said the government wanted to restore taxpayers’ confidence, improve the business environment and ensure that the benefits of reforms reached ordinary citizens. He added that no country could achieve sustainable development with widespread tax evasion.
He also urged FBR officers to adopt modern skills and perform their duties with integrity and professionalism to help build a more transparent and effective tax system.

FBR Chairman Muhammad Rashid Langrial said improving the professional skills of FBR officers and equipping them with modern expertise was essential for developing an effective tax system. He said the FBR was working to make the tax system more modern, transparent and efficient.
