Islamabad: The provincial and federal governing bodies on Saturday identified the 10 industries that needed to be kept operational to maintain the supply of essential items around the country — with the move coming in light of the recent countrywide lockdown being enforced to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, according to news sources.
The approval in this regard was provided during a virtual meeting between the government’s economic team and all relevant industry stakeholders.
The Adviser to Prime Minister on Industries Abdul Razak Dawood stated that in order to keep the economy running, there was a need to follow certain guidelines across the country; especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the meeting agreed to allow various industries to remain operational. The list includes:
- Pharmaceuticals/ surgical manufacturers
- Call Centres
- Essential Chemical
- Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
Advisor Dawood further revealed that the meeting also agreed to provide needed support to the packaging and edible manufacturing sector to maintain a continuous supply of food items around the country on stabilised rates. Similarly, support is also expected to be offered to the pharma and medical industries to ensure that the supply of medicine and surgical equipment can continue uninterrupted, he added.
Razak Dawood also said that extending support to business process outsourcing (BPOs) firms and call centres in the country was another one of the government’s priorities during the current lockdown.
