Gilgit: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Friday announced a special economic five-year uplift package for the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) worth PKR 370 billion, according to news sources.
This PKR 370 billion package focuses on electricity and road projects to promote the overall tourism sector of the area. The prime minister stated that this package is just a beginning and more assistance for the people of GB will be provided as required. He opined that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan can earn enough from tourism to offer assistance to the federal government, instead of the other way around.
Moreover, the PM revealed that the uplift package envisages hydel power generation and transmission projects, connectivity projects for tourism, skill development and scholarships, improved water and sanitation and healthcare projects. He instructed the GB government to take care to not compromise town planning and environmental protection in the execution of these projects. He compared the areas to that of Switzerland in their beauty and potential for earning profits through planned tourism.
