Lahore: A special meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reviewed progress on public transport initiatives across the province, with a strong focus on expanding electric mobility.
The meeting was informed that under the free transport programme, over 125,000 passengers have benefited across 21 routes, with 3,560 bus trips completed so far.
The chief minister approved the deployment of new electric buses in 10 districts, including Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara.
Officials said 100 electric buses will arrive this month, followed by 350 by mid-May and another 264 by the end of June. It was also decided that dedicated bus depots will be established in every division to support the electric fleet.

The meeting also reviewed plans to expand mass transit systems in Gujranwala and Faisalabad, along with progress on the province’s first e-taxi scheme. Under the initiative, 194 electric taxis are expected to arrive in May and 208 in June.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for operating 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level.
In addition, progress on metro bus station upgrades and new station designs was reviewed. The “Empower Her” project for modern bus stations in Lahore was also discussed.
The meeting further granted in-principle approval for an e-bike scheme for government employees, as part of broader efforts to promote sustainable and modern transport in Punjab.
