Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has proposed a major expansion of Murree Road, covering the stretch from Liaquat Bagh to Chandni Chowk, with an estimated cost of PKR 17 billion. The revised plan aims to widen the road from 15 feet to 20 feet on both sides and include service lanes and parking plazas, enhancing traffic flow and providing better facilities for commuters.
A senior RDA official explained that the original plan included widening Murree Road and adding service lanes to ease congestion along this busy corridor. The proposal had been submitted to the Punjab government for approval and inclusion in the Annual Development Programme (ADP). However, following suggestions from the district administration, the plan was revised and sent back to the provincial authorities for final approval.
According to the updated plan, service lanes will be constructed along a three-kilometre stretch from Liaquat Bagh to Chandni Chowk. The road expansion will require around 48 kanals of land, and PKR 17.7 billion has been allocated solely for land acquisition. Once completed, the upgraded road with service lanes is expected to operate as a signal-free corridor from Marrir Chowk to Faizabad, significantly improving traffic flow for commuters and reducing travel time.
The official added that detailed designs will be finalized once the provincial government releases the required funds. Land surveys are already underway on both sides of the road, and construction work is expected to begin immediately after the government grants approval. The widening project is also expected to improve the overall appearance of the area while facilitating smoother movement for residents and local businesses.
Currently, service lanes exist from Chandni Chowk to Faizabad, and the addition of new lanes will further enhance the road’s traffic capacity. These planned upgrades to Murree Road are set to improve infrastructure, ease congestion, and provide modern parking solutions, offering commuters and residents a more convenient and organized travel experience in Rawalpindi.
