Dera Ismail Kha: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday announced that Pakistan’s second largest cargo airport will be constructed in Dera Ismail Khan, following the Gwadar International Airport.
Speaking to various delegations, he said the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had briefed him on the project, noting that the new airport would function as an international trade junction along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
According to him, the facility will not only benefit the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also adjoining regions of Punjab and Balochistan.

Fazlur Rehman said land acquisition for the project had already been initiated under Section 4, while technical teams were preparing detailed reports to determine the runway’s location and alignment. A CAA team, he added, would soon present progress updates.
He further shared that an industrial zone is planned alongside the airport, with a focus on agro-based industries to generate economic opportunities for local populations and strengthen regional trade connectivity.
In response to questions, the JUI-F chief emphasized that law and order challenges remain a significant hurdle to development and called for addressing them with wisdom, foresight, and careful consideration of ground realities.
