Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed amendments to the Income Tax Rules, 2002, to make the online submission of income tax returns and withholding statements mandatory for individual taxpayers.
According to a notification issued by the FBR, the draft amendments have been prepared under Section 237(1) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. The proposed changes introduce a new rule under Rule 73, requiring individuals to electronically file both their income tax returns and withholding statements through the FBR’s online system.

The tax authority stated that the move aims to promote the use of digital platforms, streamline the filing process, and strengthen data management within the tax system.
The FBR has invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders, which can be submitted within seven days of the publication of the draft in the official gazette. All feedback will be reviewed before finalizing the amendments.
